I was so excited about my tile mirror updo, that I decided to keep on going! Not wanting to waste anything, I brainstormed about what to do with the little tile I had left.
My son’s bathroom sink has an opening that I covered over with a sink skirt. He used to throw his dirty towels in a pile there, and you can imagine how gross that was!
I wanted to create some extra storage space that could be hidden and portable. I purchased a microwave cart at Target…
Then came the fun part! Using some left over plain white 4 x 4 tiles I found in the basement from when the house was built ( doesn’t everyone have these?), I started to lay out a fun pattern. I used the left over mirror tile to create a lip and purchased some accent glass tiles at Home Depot to fill in the gaps.
Once I decided on a pattern, I decided to add some spacers to make sure everything was lined up evenly. I took a picture of my pattern and removed my tiles.
Next, I applied the Simple Mat.I DID NOT REMOVE THE UPPER LAYER.
Grouting went pretty quickly because I used the same pre-mixed SimpleMat grout in DeLoran gray.
The tricky part was filling in the gaps created in the border, because I didn’t have enough tiles from the mirror project to go all around the perimeter of the cart. I had to build up these spots with extra grout. It wasn’t really hard, just messy.
I used the float tool to smooth the sides and then ran painters tape along the outer edge to hold it in place until the grout hardened.
And then I just filled up the bottom shelves with towels, Clorox wipes to make cleaning a little more convenient for my
lazy , um I mean ,teenage son and then added his essential and some non essential toiletries. Voila! A perfectly functional tiled storage cart!
